SHILLONG, APR 1: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday said that construction of the long-pending LPG bottling plant is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed soon.
Speaking to media persons, Sangma said construction is finally underway.
“It is something that was hanging for a very long time and it is this government that took the decision, provided the land and the construction has started. Obviously everything takes time, you cannot expect the construction to be over but it is going very fast. So, we expect it (to be completed) very soon,” he said. “It should have been done a long time back but that’s okay we took the decision, we provided the land and we are now at a point where we should be able to complete it,” he said.
The chief minister also informed that commercial LPG supplies remain under strain nationwide, but domestic use in Meghalaya is still being managed with only minor shortages.
“There is from the domestic use we are still managing, there are some shortages but not that much,” Sangma said.
“But when it comes to commercial LPG there is a shortage throughout the nation so the government has increased to 70% of the original amount which was there for all the state. It has been increased from 20% to 70% but the actual impact of that is yet to be felt. We do expect that in the coming days that the actual supply will go up and we do expect some relief.”
He further added, “These are a bit of a challenge as you are aware almost 90% of the LPG requirement that is there comes from this region and passes through the Strait of Hormuz and therefore, the challenges are there,” he said. “But at the same, the government of India is making arrangements at different levels to minimize the inconvenience that the people are facing.”
