Guwahati, Aug 26: Normal life has been brought to a griding halt in Sikkim and North Bengal’s Darjeeling due to landslides triggered by incessant rainfall.
According to reports, Babulal Rai, 59 years, of Darjeeling and a three-year-old died in Gyalshing district of Sikkim.
“Babulal Rai, a resident of Puttabong in the Bijanbari community block, died after his house was hit by a landslide on Friday. Rai’s wife and granddaughter had a miraculous escape as they were in another part of the house when the kitchen, where Rai was working, was crushed,” said a source.
According to official, the body was later recovered from debris and the body was sent for post-mortem.
In Sikkim, a three-year-old boy died in Gyalshing district on Friday morning after massive landslides struck the house.
Sikkim chief minister Prem Singh Tamang has offered his condolences to the bereaved family.
“The landslide that struck their home and damaged it, taking two rooms and, more importantly, the precious child, has left our entire community in shock and mourning,” Tamang said in a statement on his Facebook page.
The Sikkim government has handed over a compensation of Rs. 4 lakh to the family of the deceased boy and promised another Rs. 5 lakh.
According to reports, road communication was affected due to the incessant rains and landslides in many areas of Sikkim and Darjeeling. “Road communication has been snapped. The district administration has taken measures to clear the roads,” said an official.
