Shillong, May 26: Chief of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Titosstarwell Chyne has suggested the need to hold a special meeting with the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) to discuss the border dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.

In his letter to KAAC chief Dr Tuliram Ronghang, Chyne said, “In this regard, I would like to suggest that a special meeting may be held between KHADC and KAAC to discuss the matter thoroughly and the outcome may be submitted to our concerned state governments for necessary action.”

He said the boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam has not been resolved till date and this includes the areas under the jurisdiction of the KHADC adjacent to the areas under KAAC which are known as Block II.

According to him, this non-settlement of the border dispute has created a lot of problems and the people residing in the border have faced a lot of difficulties in the past and the situation is getting worse day by day.

“This long pending issue requires our commitment to solve once and for all at the earliest, in order to bring back peace, tranquillity, normalcy, development and to avoid law and order situation that may arise in the future,” Chyne asserted.

Urging the need to maintain peace and tranquillity in the border areas, the KHADC chief said, “In the meantime, I feel that peace should be maintained at all cost and harassment of any sort to the residents especially the Khasi Pnar communities should be stopped in order to respect the sentiment and their fundamental rights as enshrined under the Constitution of India.”
