Shillong, Oct 20: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has decided to hold a protest march to the main secretariat on November 8, to protest against the state government’s failure to implement its 7-point charter of demands to tackle the growing drug menace in the state.

The HYC also appealed to the public to come out in large number to join hands with the organization’s fight on the issue.

The seven-point charter of demands submitted to the Chief Minister includes setting up of government own treatment & rehabilitation centre especially in Shillong, setting up of free detoxification OST and day-care centres in all the vulnerable districts, establishing fast track courts/special courts for cases under NDPS Act, investigation and prosecution of cases under NDPS Act, 1985, prevention of illicit traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988 (PIT-NDPS Act), strengthening the drug supply reduction strategy and establishing office of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Shillong.

Speaking to media persons, HYC President Roy Kupar Synrem claimed that these seven demands of the HYC are already included in the Drug Reduction and Action Mission (DREAM), which was announced by the state government in 2023.

Synrem informed that before the march to main secretariat, the HYC has decided to hold a series of public meeting starting from October 25 in Umsning, October 28 in Nongstoin, October 29 in Nongpoh, October 30 in Iawmusiang Jowai, October 31 in Mawkyrwat Market, November 1 in Khliehriat, November 2 in Mairang and pockets meeting in Mawlai, Upper Shillong, Mawprem, Rynjah and Mawryngkneng.

He alleged that though the state government had announced the DREAM project in 2023, but till date there has been no evidence of implementation on the ground. “The DREAM project remains only a dream for the state government,” said Synrem.

Synrem said that the state government should understand that the fight against drugs is not only the fight of the HYC but it is a fight of all the people of the State who are concerned about the welfare of the society.

“Therefore, the HYC will seek the support of the people of the state to join hands in the fight to eradicate drugs from the state especially from Shillong,” he said.
