Human Rights recommends ₹50,000 compensation in Rimpu Bagan case

Tura, Jan 30: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has recommended the payment of compensation to victims of human rights violations linked to the police operation and detention of persons at Rimpu Bagan in Tura, West Garo Hills district, in 2022.

According to an official press release, the Commission registered a total of 30 cases relating to complaints of human rights violations during the operation conducted by police at Rimpu Bagan on June 22, 2022. “Out of the 30 cases registered, 15 cases were withdrawn by the complainants,” the MHRC stated.

The Commission conducted an enquiry into the remaining 15 cases and examined evidence presented by both parties. Following the completion of the enquiry, the MHRC passed its final order on January 29, 2026, addressing the matter to the Principal Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Home (Police) Department.

“In the Final Order, the Commission has recommended payment of compensation of Rupees 50,000/- (Fifty Thousand) each to the complainants for violation of Human Rights,” the notification said.

The recommendation has been made under Section 18(e) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993, the press release added.
