Tura, March 23: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Monday hailed the amendment passed by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) mandating Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificates for candidates contesting MDC elections as a “historic” and long-overdue decision.
Speaking to reporters in Tura, the Chief Minister said the move reaffirms the very purpose of the district councils, which have traditionally been established to represent and safeguard the interests of tribal communities in the region.

“This is truly a very historic moment and a very, very important decision. The district councils have always been meant for the tribals of the region, and hence it is important that such conditions are brought in,” Sangma said.
He noted that the demand for such a provision had remained pending for over 74 years, with successive governments and councils unable to implement it.
Expressing satisfaction over the development, Sangma said the decision marks a significant step toward strengthening tribal representation and preserving the original intent of the autonomous district councils.
At the same time, the Chief Minister struck a note of inclusivity, expressing confidence that non-tribal communities would understand the rationale behind the amendment.

“I am sure that all our non-tribal friends will understand that this council is meant for the tribals of the region and there will be cooperation from all sides,” he said.
Conrad urged all sections of society to work together in peace and harmony for the progress of Garo Hills, the state and the wider Northeast region.
