Guwahati, Aug 28: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning across Guwahati over the next 24 hours, raising concerns over waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and localised landslides in vulnerable areas.
According to the IMD, the city could witness rainfall up to 6 cm within 24 hours, with intense spells of 2–3 cm per hour. Such weather conditions are likely to aggravate existing drainage issues, cause slow vehicular movement, and heighten the risk of flash floods and landslides in low-lying and hillside zones.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has placed emergency response systems on alert and urged residents to take necessary precautions.
Commuters and long-distance travellers have been advised to plan their schedules carefully and avoid unnecessary movement during peak rainfall periods.
Residents in flood-prone and landslide-prone areas have been asked to remain vigilant, follow advisories, and monitor official weather updates for timely information. ASDMA will continue to update the situation as it evolves.
