Shillong, Aug 19: An alarming increase in conjunctivitis cases have been reported in Meghalaya with Mawlai Mawroh Community Health Centre (CHC) recording 20 new cases in a single day on Saturday.

This was informed by District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) of East Khasi Hills, Dr Adriana Lyngdoh.

Dr Lyngdoh informed that most of the patients were athletes from the Sports Authority of India (SAI) from the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) campus. Dr. Lyngdoh stressed that maintaining good hand hygiene is crucial in preventing the spread of the infection.

Conjunctivitis, commonly known as “pink eye,” is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the thin tissue that covers the front of the eye. Symptoms include redness, itching, irritation, and discharge from the eyes. The recent surge in cases has prompted health officials to issue a public advisory emphasizing the importance of washing hands thoroughly before touching the eyes.

Meghalaya Government has also issued advisory on Conjunctivitis.
