Shillong, Aug 30: Meghalaya’s new Governor, C.H. Vijayashankar, has assured his support to Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) for their on-going initiatives to enhance the development of local communities.
He made this assurance to a delegation of KHADC that met the governor on Friday led by Chief Executive Member (CEM), Pyniaid Sing Syiem, along with the Deputy CEM and other executive members.
During the meeting, Governor Vijayashankar praised Meghalaya’s stunning natural beauty and favorable climatic conditions. He also emphasized several key areas of interest. He highlighted the importance of improving educational standards to foster growth and development.
He also expressed concern over the issue of drug abuse and discussed strategies to combat it effectively. He talked about the protection of biodiversity and stressed the need for robust measures to safeguard the region’s rich biodiversity.
Further, he encouraged the planting of native species to support ecological balance, and underscored the critical importance of conserving water resources for sustainable development.
The CEM and other members briefed the Governor on the Khasi society’s traditional institutions, including the Village Darbar and the Elaka Institution Council, detailing their roles and responsibilities. They also outlined various initiatives taken by KHADC aimed at preserving cultural heritage, conserving the environment, and promoting societal welfare.
The delegation invited the Governor to visit sacred groves and the traditional Khasi village of Mawphlang. The Governor accepted the invitation with enthusiasm and has scheduled his visit to Mawphlang for September 3, 2024.
