Guwahati, Sept 28: Assam Police gunned down four dreaded criminals in an encounter near Ghiladubi, close to the Assam–Meghalaya border in Goalpara district, late Saturday night.

The deceased have been identified as Mukunda Rabha, Subur Ali, Zahidul Islam, and Chengbat Marak.

Police said the gang was preparing to abduct a local businessman when the operation was launched based on specific intelligence under Goalpara SP Navaneet Mahanta and South Salmara-Mankachar SP Abhilash Barua.

As the police team closed in, the gang members allegedly opened fire. Two were killed on the spot, while the other two sustained critical injuries and later succumbed at Dhupdhara Model Hospital.

“We have recovered four pistols, ammunition, a vehicle, and multiple mobile phones from the site. Initial investigations suggest the gang was linked to several robberies and illegal arms trafficking,” a police official said.

Authorities are now probing the group’s wider criminal network.

Earlier, a notorious dacoit, Rajibul Ali, was shot dead by police during an operation at Matia.
