Nongpoh, Oct 4: A tragic road accident at Thadrang village in Ri Bhoi district claimed the lives of four children on Friday evening after they were run over by a dumper truck carrying stone chips.
The incident occurred around 6 p.m. when the truck (registration number ML-05-AC-8447), traveling from Jowai towards Ri Bhoi, hit the children who were walking along the roadside. Eyewitnesses said the driver was overspeeding and lost control of the vehicle.
Three girls, aged 19, 13, and 11, died on the spot. Another 13-year-old girl, who suffered grievous injuries, was rushed to hospital but succumbed this morning.
Police have arrested the driver and seized the truck. The vehicle has been taken to Mawlasnai Police Outpost for further investigation.
