Imphal, Nov 2: Manipur Police have arrested five people in Kakching district for their alleged involvement in the assault of four student leaders.

According to reports, four students from Chandel district were allegedly assaulted on the night of October 30 near Bijoypur along the Kakching–Lamkhai–Pallel Road by unidentified persons.

Based on an FIR registered at Kakching Police Station, the accused were apprehended on Friday. Police have also seized two vehicles for verification.

The arrested individuals are residents of Pallel Thong Wangma and Pallel Chandel Lamkhai areas.

The arrests came a day after the Sirti Upa Ruh (Monsang Tribe Union) condemned the assault on four Monsang tribe student leaders by unidentified persons.

Manipur has been witnessing ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 2023. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands displaced in the clashes.

The Centre imposed President’s Rule in Manipur following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh. Security forces have since launched a massive crackdown on insurgents, leading to several arrests.
