Shillong, April 9: The Dolloi of Jowai Elaka Puramon Kynjing on Wednesday assured to cancel the no objection certificate (NOC) issued for the proposed setting up of a coke plant within the jurisdiction of Wapungskur village in East Jaintia Hills besides issuing an order to the headman of Mookhep village to also immediately cancel the NOC issued by him to the OM OM Coke.
The Dolloi has given the assurance to a delegation of the Wapungskur dorbar shnong during a meeting held in Jowai.
“Today we met the Dolloi of Elaka Jowai and we are happy that we got a positive response from him. He has assured us that he would issue a letter directing the headman of Mookhep to immediately cancel the NOC he had issued for setting up of the coke plant within the jurisdiction of the Wapungskur. He has also assured us that within one or two days to write a letter to concerned departments informing them that the NOC issued by him has been cancelled,” headman of Wapungskur Postling Dkhar said after the meeting.
He informed that the dorbar shnong had also met the Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills on April 4 and he had immediately written to different departments on the need to keep the proposal for setting up the coke plant in abeyance till the matter is resolved.
“However, we want to make it very clear that even if the matter is resolved, we will not allow setting up of any coke plant within the jurisdiction of Wapungskur,” Dkhar said.
Stating that there is no boundary dispute between Mookhep and Wapungskur, Dkhar said, “Both the villages have proper boundaries. But it is clearly seen that the land where the proposed coke plant will be set up falls within the jurisdiction of Wapungskur.”
Further, the Wapungskur headman informed that the Chief Forest Officer (CFO) of the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) has assured the delegation of the dorbar shnong that the NOC and clearance issued by the council will be immediately cancelled since the OM OM Coke have failed to submit proper documents.
Earlier, the delegation had also petitioned to the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB), which had on March 7, granted the consent to establish (CoE) to Om Om Coke for setting up a LAM COKE Manufacturing Unit with 1 chimney only at Thlakuru, Mookhep village with a project cost of Rs 4.50 crore.
The CoE is valid for a period up to February 28, 2026 unless otherwise suspended or revoked. The validity period shall be extended, if necessary, till such time the industry is ready for commercial production.
The MSPCB member secretary had recently assured the delegation of Wapungskur dorbar shnong to conduct a spot inspection before taking a call on the matter.
