Tura, Oct 3: Meghalaya Congress working president Deborah Marak on Tuesday said she is ready to pursue the matter of bringing back Dr Mukul Sangma into the Congress fold, if she gets the nod from the party high command.
The Congress party held a review meeting of its block and district committees in Tura at Congress Bhawan on Tuesday.
During the meeting, which is seen as crucial before the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, Marak said she is ready to make the effort to bring back Dr. Sangma and others back into the Congress from the Trinamool Congress but this can happen only with the decision of the Congress High Command.
Former CM Dr. Mukul Sangma along with 11 other Congress MLAs had joined the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) in November 2021, after the party high command had appointed Shillong MP Vincent H Pala as the president of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC).
In the meeting on Tuesday, Marak also praised the party workers for sticking with it despite its leaders leaving for other parties (referring to Dr. Mukul and co). She said the party will look for capable candidates for the next district council elections and said workers and supporters remain with the congress even though some leaders had left.
Meanwhile, Congress leader and opposition chief whip, Saleng Sangma, said that Congress has mostly been ruling or in a coalition Government in Meghalaya but last 5 years it sat in the opposition, which was something the party has seldom experienced. Yet, he said that the party has learnt from its experiences and would return stronger since it continues to have grassroot support and workers.
