Shillong, Jan 7: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Saturday laid the Foundation Stone of Um Shillong Lummawnei, Umthlong, Mawiong & Block 13 Water Supply Scheme in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong, Minister, PHE, Renikton Tongkhar, Commissioner & Secretary, PHED, Syed Md Andaleeb Razi and MDC, Mawlai, Teiborlang Pathaw in a function that was held at Mawlai.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister said the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is a very important program both for the government of India and the government of Meghalaya. “In 2019, when the Jal Jeevan program started, Meghalaya ranked at the bottom in terms of water connection as only 0.75 per cent households had water tap connection and today Meghalaya is one of the best performing states and this has been acknowledged by the Jal Shakti Minister himself,” he said.

The Chief Minister expressed his gratitude to all the officials of the PHE department from the Minister to the grassroot level for their tireless and dedicated hard work. He also informed that the State has received additional funds for two consecutive years based on the performance. “This is a testimony of the hard work of the team,” he said.

Sangma also informed that Meghalaya will be one of the first few states to achieve the target of JJM by 2024, as laid down by the government of India. “We took it upon ourselves to complete the program by 2022 but as there were a number of challenges, we could not complete though 50 per cent of the target has been achieved. However, I assure you, Meghalaya will achieve the target within the stipulated time as given by the government of India,” he said.

The project cost is Rs 95,38,22,518 funded under JJM.
