Shillong, Sept 19: A clash broke out between the Pnar farmers of Lapangap Village of West Jaiñtia Hills and Karbis of Assam once again in the Assam- Meghalaya border in Lapangap village of West Jaintia Hills.

As many as 30 farmers from Lapangap had gone to their paddy at around 10:00 am on Friday to harvest rice when suddenly a group of Karbis from neighbouring West Karbi Anglong district started obstructing the former using catapults at around 12:00 noon.

The Village elders of Lapangap Village informed the Meglaya police team stationed at the village about the incident and the police team rushed to the spot only to be welcomed by the increasing number of aggresive Karbis who used catapults constantly against the farmers and the police who shielded themselves.

Later the Meghalaya Police stationed at the village contacted their counterparts from Assam who were engaged in driving away the Karbis from the site.

Later the Meghalaya Police and Dorbar Chnong requested the Assam Police to ensure that the farmers would harvest their crops peacefully to which the Assam Police rejected as the situation is volatile.

Meanwhile the Dorbar Chnong (Village Dorbar) urged the state government to increase the manpower in the village and to empower them to protect the farmers from the village during the upcoming weeks of harvest.
