SHILLONG, July 15: BJP leader and Cabinet Minister Alexander Laloo Hek on Tuesday said that the party will support the consensus decision led by the National People’s Party (NPP) regarding the upcoming Rajya Sabha MP nomination.

As a smaller partner in the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA), Hek made it clear that the BJP will back the decision taken collectively by the coalition, especially the one led by its largest constituent—the NPP.

“That [Rajya Sabha nomination] purely depends on the big party of the alliance. We are a small alliance partner in the MDA government, so we have to listen to the consensus led by the NPP,” Hek told reporters.

He added that while the BJP is not pushing for any particular individual, the party will go along with the nominee agreed upon by the NPP, in consultation with other partners like the UDP, HSPDP, and breakaway groups that support the government.

“We are not saying we are supporting any individual, but we are supporting the consensus that comes from the alliance partners, especially the one led by the NPP,” he reiterated.

Hek’s remarks come at a time when discussions over the Rajya Sabha seat are underway within the ruling coalition. His statement signals a unified front by the MDA, with the BJP affirming its support for the NPP’s leadership in the matter.
