Guwahati, Dec 6: The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) reportedly halted the renovation of a temple near the Kushiyara River along the India-Bangladesh border in Assam’s Sribhumi district on Thursday.
According to local reports, BGB personnel arrived aboard a speedboat from the Jakiganj point in Bangladesh’s Sylhet division. Upon reaching the Indian side, they instructed workers to cease restoration efforts at the site.
The Border Security Force (BSF), stationed at the border, is engaged in discussions with the BGB officers, who objected to the ongoing work.
“The Manasa Mandir is one of the oldest temples on the Assam side. Suddenly, the Bangladesh border guards arrived and opposed the renovation. The BSF personnel also told us to stop,” said a local resident.
He further expressed his frustration: “Bangladesh has been destroying temples and places of worship for years. Now they are entering India and interfering with our construction work. If this continues, what are we supposed to do in our own country?”
The Manasa temple, located at the Kushiyara immersion ghat in Sribhumi, had fallen into disrepair. The Assam government recently allocated ₹3 lakh for its restoration, and work began earlier this week.
The Sribhumi district shares a 94 km border with Bangladesh, of which 43 km is riverine.
Amid reports of alleged atrocities against Hindu minorities in Bangladesh, tensions in the border areas remain high, with incidents like these further straining relations.
