Jowai, May 10: Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on May 9 inaugurated the permanent office premises of the Barato Police Outpost in West Jaintia Hills district, saying the upgraded facility would strengthen policing and improve law and order management in the Assam-Meghalaya border region.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, Mowkaiaw MLA Nujorki Sungoh and Meghalaya Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang, along with senior district officials and police officers.
Established on 4.6 acres of land donated by Barato village and late Profitable Dkhar in 2017, the police outpost has now received a permanent infrastructure setup aimed at enhancing policing and public service delivery in the area.
Speaking at the event, Tynsong said the new facility would enable police personnel to respond more effectively to accidents and maintain better law and order in the region. He urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement agencies and work collectively to prevent crime in their communities.
DGP Nongrang said the establishment of the Barato Outpost reflected the growing policing needs of the area, particularly villages located near the Assam border. She said the facility, sanctioned in November 2022, was completed through close coordination between the district administration and district police.
She added that the outpost would play a key role in maintaining peace and addressing crime-related challenges in the border region.
Additional Superintendent of Police Cresency W Lyngdoh, who presided over the programme, described the inauguration as a “new chapter” for the region and said the outpost would serve as a symbol of trust and protection for Barato and neighbouring villages under its jurisdiction.
On the occasion, Tynsong also laid the foundation stones for multiple road infrastructure projects worth ₹24.79 crore in West Jaintia Hills district.
The projects include the improvement and widening of the Nartiang–Jonglwit-Barato road from 14 km to 21 km at a cost of ₹16.93 crore, blacktopping of the Shilliang Myntang internal village road worth ₹3.07 crore, improvement of the Maitdieng internal village road at ₹3 crore, and rehabilitation and resurfacing work from 13th NJB to Thadbamon costing ₹1.78 crore.
