Assam: Forest ranges of Kaziranga National Park inundated due to floods

Guwahati, July 17: Most of the forest ranges of Kaziranga National Park was inundated after the incessant rain for the last couple of days.

According to a official, 90 per cent of Agoratoli forest range of KNP was submerged due to flood.

“68 forest camps in Kaziranga National park was inundated after rain for the last couple of days. Flood waters entered KNP and most of the forest camps of the park comes under water. In Khora range at least 15 forest camps comes under water. Bagori range 9 camps and in Buraphar 6 forest camps comes under flood water. Till now, no casuality of animals were reported. Two hog dear were rescued today and sent at rehabilitation centre for treatment,” an forest official said.

The water level has surged in Kaziranga since Saturday, as the flood situation worsened in upper Assam. In ranges like Agoratoli, a popular tourist pocket in Kaziranga, jeep patrolling was no longer feasible.

“The situation is not yet critical but we are keeping a close watch on the safety of wildlife,” he said.

Nearly, 98,840 people across 13 districts and subdivisions were affected by floods as of Sunday evening, as per the official report of the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).

Upper and northern parts of the state are among the worst-affected places. More than 70,000 people facing inundation are from Dhemaji, Golaghat and Sivasagar districts – all in upper Assam where the Brahmaputra and its tributary, Dikhou, were flowing above the danger level on Sunday morning.
