Guwahati, Nov 11: Assam government has sounded a comprehensive security alert across the state following the deadly explosion at Delhi’s Red Fort Metro Station that claimed eight lives and injured several others.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday said the state police have been directed to intensify surveillance and take strong action against individuals from Assam who allegedly expressed support for the attack on social media.
“We have identified a few people who posted messages and emojis glorifying the Delhi blast. Such actions directly promote terrorism,” Sarma told reporters. “Their identities are being verified, and if they are from Assam, they will face arrest and prosecution under strict anti-terror laws.”
The chief minister said he has instructed the Director General of Police (DGP) to closely monitor all social media platforms and act firmly against anyone spreading extremist propaganda or sympathising with terror groups.
“If anyone celebrates violence or the loss of innocent lives, they are siding with terrorism — and we will act decisively,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, Assam Police have detained a retired government school principal, Nazrul Islam Borbhuyan of Durgapur, for posting an objectionable comment on social media about the Delhi blast.
According to police sources, Borbhuyan allegedly politicised the incident, commenting that “elections are coming ahead” — implying a link between the blast and the upcoming Bihar elections.
“The motive behind the comment is under investigation to determine whether it was politically motivated or aimed at creating public confusion,” a police official said.
Police have shared a screenshot of the post, which appears to connect the Delhi explosion to electoral politics.
Officials said security agencies in Assam have been instructed to maintain heightened vigilance at transport hubs, religious sites, and public gatherings in view of possible spillover effects from the Delhi blast.
Sarma reiterated that Assam would maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward any form of terror sympathy or online radicalisation.
“Every citizen must stand united against such acts of terror. Any attempt to justify or glorify them will not be tolerated,” the chief minister said.
