Shillong, Sept 30: Meghalaya and Assam have decided to deploy Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) on the inter-state boundary, especially at sensitive locations, following the recent spate of violence between the local communities.

“In depth discussions were held on the recent law & order situation in Block 1 (Khanduli & Psiar) Area. We have unanimously decided that State Police deputed in the areas will be asked to take a step back. In border areas, CRPF personnel will be deputed. Police forces that have been placed in certain areas by both state government will be pulled back to build the confidence of the people,” informed CM Sangma after the meeting.

He said Assam Govt will also be asking Assam police to dismantle its outposts that been put up near the border areas.

He explained that the deployment of CRPF, a neutral force, will ensure people from both sides of the border feel comfortable.

If situation demands, he said police forces from more areas could be pulled back.

Adding to Meghalaya CM’s statement, Assam CM Himanta Sarma said in Khanduli – Psiar area this year, Assam police has set up a police outpost. And Meghalaya police have also put up a police outpost in front of it, making it almost an eyeball-to-eyeball confrontation.

“So, what we have decided today, CRPF will be deployed by both the state in the border outposts,” he said.
