Shillong, Dec 28: The All Saints’ Cathedral, Shillong has urged the state government to take action against those involved in the recent incident at a church in Mawlynnong village in East Khasi Hills District.

In a statement, Bishop Purely Lyngdoh said, “(We are) very sad at what has been done in the Church at Mawlynnong, and we denounce it vehemently. It happened at a time when Christian Churches and Institutions in many places in the Country are also experiencing similar acts of disturbances in their Worship and Programs, by members of the Hindu Groups.”

He said one Hindu organisation in Assam has been threatening the local dorbar that looks after the ‘Mawjymbuin Cave’, if not allowed to perform puja there. He implied that there is a connected trend now all over the country to intensify such acts and methods.

“Whatever has prompted those people to do what they did in the Church at Mawlynnong was absolutely wrong. It could be pre-meditated, to show contempt and disregard to the Tribals of the area and their religious beliefs,” the Bishop said while adding ” We call upon the State Government and its machineries to bring to book those people who have committed such acts, and that will deter future desecration of any Places of Worship.”
