Shillong, Oct 13: Norwegian Ambassador to India May-Elin Stener explored Meghalaya’s natural attractions during a family visit over the weekend, sharing photographs of the state’s waterfalls, caves and lush landscapes on social media.

Stener, who visited the state with family members from Norway, highlighted Meghalaya’s natural beauty in a post on X on October 12.

“Spent a memorable weekend in Shillong with family from Norway, discovering the natural wonders of Meghalaya. With waterfalls, caves and lush landscapes, this beautiful state showcases the remarkable diversity & richness of India,” she wrote.

Among the places featured in her photographs were Wei Sawdong Falls and Arwah Cave, two popular natural attractions near Sohra, also known as Cherrapunji.

Wei Sawdong Falls is known for its three-tiered cascades and striking bluish-green pools surrounded by rocky cliffs and dense greenery. Located around 60 km southwest of Shillong, the waterfall is also within reach of Dainthlen Falls, making it a popular stop for visitors exploring the Sohra circuit.

Reaching the waterfall involves descending a steep trail. The trek offers visitors a closer view of the cascading water and natural pools, although the route can be challenging, particularly during wet conditions.

Stener also visited Arwah Cave, known for its limestone formations and fossil deposits. The cave offers a glimpse into the region’s geological history, with preserved marine fossils, including crustacean remains and fish bones, embedded in the limestone walls.

Stalactites hanging from the cave ceiling and stalagmites rising from the floor add to its appeal.

The ambassador’s visit brings attention to Meghalaya’s diverse natural attractions, which range from dramatic waterfalls and limestone caves to verdant hills and forested landscapes.
