SHILLONG, OCT 9: NPP state treasurer Daniel Thangkhiew has said attempts to topple the NPP-led government will not succeed, asserting that the party remains united and growing.

Addressing a campaign at Mylliem organised by the NPP Mylliem Block on Thursday night for Shillong Lok Sabha bye-poll candidate Dr DRL Nonglait, Thangkhiew said false news is being spread that the government will collapse.

“There are many forces that want to weaken and topple this government led by the NPP, but if you look at wise leaders like Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, no one will be able to topple them,” he said.

He said rumours in newspapers and social media claiming the NPP will fall are baseless.

“Our Deputy Chief Ministers have met the press from time to time and clarified there is nothing like that. I work in the secretariat with the Chief Minister and I have also given a press statement. In the past few days all NPP MLAs met together at the Chief Minister’s house and nobody has any intention to leave the party,” Thangkhiew said.

He said the Chief Minister holds monthly meetings with MLAs to discuss constituency works and people should not be misled.

Thangkhiew further claimed NPP is the only party growing in the state.

“It is only the NPP that is growing day by day. The joining of people and leaders is seen only in the NPP,” he said.

Appealing to Mylliem voters, Thangkhiew admitted the party had lost three consecutive elections in the block – MP election with Ampareen Lyngdoh, MDC election and 2023 MLA election with Hamletson Dohling.

“This is the fourth time we have come here. I stand here with humility to urge you to let this fourth time be decisive and extend full support to Dr DRL Nonglait. The whole world knows what work he has done, what qualification he has and what good intentions he has,” he said.

He said the party has become stronger in Mylliem with former Congress MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh and 2023 candidate Gill Laloo now on the same stage.

“Mylliem is one. With the coming of Bah Ronnie, the presence of Bah Hamlet has become even stronger. We fought against each other in past years, but now with his people joining NPP, the party has become stronger,” he said.

Thangkhiew also thanked the government and PWD minister Prestone Tynsong for road projects and said proposals for various schemes in Mylliem followed up by Hamlet Dohling are progressing.

Assuring party leadership of full support, he said, “I assure state president Bah Prestone and candidate Dr Nonglait that NPP Mylliem Block has become stronger and will give firm and full support.”

Taking a dig at opposition parties, he said they have no principles and issues left and are trying to mislead people.

“We should remain united and not be misled by social media news. Other parties have no issues left, they are searching for issues to deceive people. But we are clear and God-fearing people. It is our great fortune to have a candidate like Dr Nonglait – a person immersed in education, who has status and who fears God and serves God,” Thangkhiew added.
