SHILLONG, JUN 25: Members of Synjuk Ki Rangbahkur met JHADC Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat on Thursday and pressed for a law to protect the matrilineal clan lineage system practiced by indigenous communities in Meghalaya.

The delegation was led by Synjuk president RL Kharpran and included general secretary Raphael Warjri, spokesperson RL Blah, and executive members Manstudy Nongrem and JL Khongshei.

The group told the CEM that legislation is needed to safeguard the matrilineal system, which they described as the core of Khasi and Jaintia social and cultural identity.

They argued that without legal backing, the system faces erosion over time.

Synjuk representatives also called for a constitutional and legal framework to formally recognize the Dorbar Kur, or clan council, and to empower Rangbah Kur, the clan elders.

According to them, such recognition would allow traditional institutions to carry out their customary duties in preserving lineage, customs, and indigenous practices.

The delegation told Shiwat they are confident that a dedicated law would strengthen traditional institutions and help ensure the matrilineal heritage continues for future generations.

The JHADC CEM heard the delegation’s demands, though no official decision was announced following the meeting.
