SHILLONG, JUN 23: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Transport Sniawbhalang Dhar on Tuesday said the state government will begin issuing licences for two-wheeler taxi aggregators and individual operators within the next two weeks, following a meeting scheduled for next week.

Dhar said licences will be granted at the state level to all eligible applicants whose documents are in order.

“I will be having a meeting next week, so after ten days or two weeks, we will issue licences to whoever applies, whether individuals or aggregators, if their documents are in order. It will be a state licence,” Dhar said.

He said transport officials have been directed to intensify enforcement and act against unlicensed bike taxis currently operating on roads.

“I have instructed my officers to strengthen field presence and to take action against those operating illegally on the road,” he stated.

The deputy CM added that the department is still compiling data on applications and compliance. Exact figures on licences issued will be shared once the process is fully implemented.

“Information is being collected. We are yet to implement it fully. Once it is implemented fully, only then will I be able to tell you how many of them have been issued licences,” Dhar said.
