SHILLONG, JAN 15: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said that the Shillong Airport expansion project is on track, despite encountering some challenges.

“So basically, the things are on track, again a very complicated issue which requires multiple levels of intervention and multiple stakeholders,” he said.

Sangma highlighted a recent land issue flagged by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) concerning safety concerns, which the government is working to resolve.

“Another land issue that has come up again, which we are trying to resolve… Safety of the flight and safety of the people residing in that area is our priority,” he said.

The Chief Minister expressed confidence that the project would not be significantly delayed, with work expected to start soon.

“We don’t expect much delay in the work…once that part is done, then the construction will start, and while the construction happens, we will be working towards resolving the other pending issues,” Sangma said.

Sangma announced that the government aims to complete the project by 2027, with larger flights expected to operate from February-March 2027.

“I do expect that by 2027 we will be able to complete and reach the target that we have planned,” Sangma added.
