Shillong, Dec 15: The Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers’ Association (KJDSTA) has urged the Meghalaya government to enhance the Dearness Allowance (DA) for deficit school teachers to 51%, matching the rate for government servants, and release pending arrears.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the association held at Malki ground on Monday.
In a letter to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, KJDSTA President Boswell S Pala expressed “severe financial hardship and mental anguish” faced by thousands of deficit teachers due to the stagnant DA rate of 43%.
“We strongly urge the Government to take immediate and decisive action to enhance the DA of deficit teachers at par with Government servants and release the arrears of past DA enhancements,” Pala wrote.
The association has given the government until January 15, 2026, to fulfill their demands, threatening democratic protests and agitations if not met.
The KJDSTA also requested the Chief Minister’s intervention in several urgent matters, including implementation of the Centralized Provident Fund system, release of Death-cum-Retirement Gratuity (DCRG) to retired teachers, and ensuring error-free MEGH-SIMS portal.
The Meghalaya government recently announced a 2% DA hike for employees, bringing the rate to 51% effective July 1, 2025.
However, deficit teachers continue to receive 43% DA, sparking protests and demands for parity.
