SHILLONG, DEC 4: Chairman-cum-Managing Director of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) Sanjay Goyal on Thursday clarified that the frequent power cuts in the state are due to shutdowns for maintenance and upgradation work, and not load shedding.

Speaking to the media, Goyal stated, “Shutdown needs to be taken, we are taking a lot of work under RDSS and other schemes to upgrade the lines. They can’t be done on live lines; notices are given in newspapers every day.”

Goyal explained that the shutdowns are necessary to repair and strengthen the power infrastructure, adding, “It’s the only season when we can do the work. It will continue in various localities on various dates.”

He emphasized that load shedding is not being implemented, saying, “There is no load shedding. Shutdown can also be due to local issues, like a meter catching fire, and we have to cut the line and remove the wire.”

Goyal urged residents to bear with the disruptions, stating, “You have to give time to MeECL to repair and strengthen the lines. The impact will be seen after a year when there are strong winds and no power cuts.”

MeECL is undertaking extensive work, including adding 2500 transformers, 4500 km of new lines, and replacing 1000 km of wires.

Goyal assured that efforts are being made to minimize disruptions, especially during exam time
