Itanagar, Sept 16: At least 90 students of Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) at Nangnyo in Pakke Kessang district staged a dramatic protest by marching nearly 65 km to demand subject teachers for their school.

Wearing their blue uniforms, the students set off on foot from Nyangno village on Sunday, walked through the night, and reached Lemmi, the district headquarters, on Monday morning, an official said. Video clips of the march in the dark and their arrival at daybreak have gone viral on social media.

Led by Class 11 and 12 students, the group carried posters reading “A school without a teacher is just a building” and raised slogans demanding immediate appointments of Geography and Political Science teachers.

The protestors claimed they had been compelled to take the step after repeated appeals to school and higher education officials went unanswered.

School authorities confirmed the shortage. The headmistress admitted there were no Geography and Political Science teachers but insisted the school had sufficient tutors for other subjects. “The courses have already been completed for the half-yearly examinations,” she said.

Officials noted the students had not informed the hostel warden or school management about the protest march.
