Shillong, Aug 18: A tense situation erupted in Maikhuli village, located along the interstate border between Meghalaya and Assam, after local residents dismantled electricity poles erected by the Assam State Electricity Board (ASEB).

The incident, which took place on Monday, led to a confrontation and clashes between villagers from Meghalaya and Assam.

The dispute began when villagers from Maikhuli removed an electricity pole installed by ASEB near the Maikhuli pond.

Following the removal, some individuals from Assam reportedly questioned and sought out residents of Meghalaya over the incident, leading to a gathering of villagers from Maikhuli and a subsequent physical clash between the two sides.

During the confrontation, some women from Maikhuli were manhandled, and their clothes were torn.

District authorities from both Meghalaya and Assam intervened, managing to disperse the groups and bring the situation under control.

To restore harmony and foster goodwill among residents, the district administrations of Meghalaya and Assam have decided to form a Peace Committee.

This development comes amid ongoing efforts to resolve the border dispute between the two states.

Notably, Chief Ministers of Assam and Meghalaya, Himanta Biswa Sarma and Conrad Sangma have recently met at Guwahati on August 16, for strengthening state relations and ensure peace in the border.
