Shillong, May 26: East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem, on Monday said a suo motu case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act after disturbing CCTV footage from Umsohsun locality surfaced online, showing a masked man harassing school-going girls.
“With regard to the case that has gone viral on social media, we have registered a suo moto case under relevant sections of the POCSO Act,” said SP Syiem. “We have a team dedicated to studying the various CCTV cameras around the area. Another team has been assigned to identify and arrest the person involved. Efforts are ongoing in this regard.”
The footage, recorded on Friday morning, shows the man engaging in highly inappropriate behaviour—lifting the skirts of young female students and recording the act on his phone. The incident has sparked outrage among residents and concerned citizens.
Tribelget Dkhar, the Rangbah Shnong (headman) of Umsohsun, strongly condemned the act in a statement issued on Sunday. He also urged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity to the authorities without delay.
Authorities have assured that all efforts are being made to trace the perpetrator and ensure justice is served.
