Tura, May 5: In a push to make Tura Medical College operational by the next academic session, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Monday inspected the ongoing construction and expressed satisfaction with the project’s progress.

“Close to 80 percent of the civil work has been completed. The progress is satisfactory, and we are optimistic that a major portion of the college infrastructure will be ready within this calendar year,” the chief minister said.

He informed that the government is actively reviewing the pace of construction to ensure that targets are met in a timely manner. “We are making every effort to start the academic session at Tura Medical College as early as possible,” he added.

The Chief Minister also informed that the government is exploring partnerships for the management and operation of the medical college, while stating that the ownership of the college will remain with the government.

“Tura Medical College will primarily serve the students of Meghalaya. A majority of the seats will be reserved for students from the state, ensuring better access to medical education for our youth,” he said.

The Tura Medical College is envisioned to strengthen healthcare education in the state and healthcare facilities in Garo Hills.

It may be noted that the state government is making investments to improve healthcare accessibility in remote areas, modernize government hospitals, and recruit qualified healthcare professionals. “Our focus is on building a robust and inclusive healthcare system that ensures quality medical services are available to every citizen, regardless of geography,” he added.
