Shillong, January 18: Nehru Yuva Kendra (NYK) Shillong, in collaboration with the Traffic Police Department of East Khasi Hills District, have launched a road safety awareness campaign to address the rising concerns about road safety and traffic management in Shillong.

The initiative, led by K. Prasad, Superintendent of Police (Traffic Branch), Shillong, commenced on Friday and will continue until January 23, 2025, as part of National Road Safety Week.

The campaign assumes importance as road accidents have claimed 218 lives in Shillong in road accidents in the last five years.

On the first day, youth volunteers actively engaged with the public by distributing informative pamphlets and assisting traffic police at high-traffic zones like Khyndailad and Polo. Their efforts are focused on raising awareness about traffic rules, safe driving practices, and the importance of adhering to road safety guidelines.

Deputy Director of NYK Shillong, D. Rapsang, emphasized the campaign’s significance, stating, “Road safety is not just the responsibility of authorities; it is a shared duty of every citizen. This initiative provides a platform for youth to actively contribute toward creating a safer environment on our roads.”

The campaign highlighted the critical role of public participation in improving road safety. With Shillong witnessing increasing vehicular congestion, such initiatives are vital to instilling a culture of responsibility among drivers and pedestrians.

Over the next few days, more volunteers are expected to join the campaign, gaining practical experience in traffic management and public engagement. Their involvement underscores the power of community-led efforts in addressing societal issues.

The awareness drive comes as a timely reminder of the importance of reducing road accidents and fatalities, contributing to a safer Shillong.
