Imphal, Nov 17: The discovery of the bodies of six missing women and children in Manipur’s violence-hit Jiribam district has ignited widespread unrest, with angry mobs targeting the residences of multiple ministers and legislators, predominantly from the ruling BJP, on Saturday.

According to police, the homes of ministers Sapam Ranjan Singh, Leishangthem Susindro Meitei, and Yumnam Khemchand Singh were attacked in different locations. Among the targeted legislators was Rajkumar Imo Singh, son-in-law of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.

Protesters also gathered outside the residences of Janata Dal (United) MLA T. Arun (Wangkhei constituency) and BJP MLA Karam Shyam (Langthabal constituency), while one vehicle parked outside an MLA’s residence in Imphal was set ablaze.

The violence extended across Imphal East and Imphal West districts, with large groups of demonstrators assembling in front of the homes of various political leaders. Security forces deployed tear gas shells to disperse the protesters in Imphal city and its outskirts, as tensions continued to escalate.

The attacks, road blockades, and demonstrations erupted following the grim discovery in Jiribam, adding to the already volatile situation in the state, which has been grappling with prolonged ethnic violence.
