Shillong, Aug 16: Meghalaya government has declared ‘state mourning’ for three days as a mark of respect to late Salseng C. Marak, former Chief Minister of Meghalaya, who passed away on Friday morning in Tura, West Garo Hills.

The state mourning is effective from August 16.

During the state mourning, the National Flag will be flown at half mast where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment.

A state funeral will also be held at Resubelpara Mini Stadium on Saturday, where the dignitaries, officials, and the public will gather to pay their last respects to the leader.

The funeral procession is slated to commence from the residence of (L) Salseng C. Marak at Gajingpara at 12:05 PM, making its way to Resubelpara Mini Stadium, where a formal ceremony will be held.

Following the official ceremony, his mortal remains will be laid to rest at the Gajingpara Cemetery in Resubelpara in North Garo Hills district.

Late Salseng C. Marak was the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 1993 to 1998. He was the third Garo Chief Minister of the State, after (L) Williamson A. Sangma and (L) Purno A. Sangma. A fiercely loyal person with the highest of integrity and self-esteem, he scripted history when he became the first chief minister to serve a full five-year term without changing his party when Meghalaya CM’s chair was touted as a ‘musical chair’.
