Guwahati, April 18: In a significant verdict, the Guwahati High Court has pronounced Naba Kumar Sarania ineligible to contest the Lok Sabha elections from Kokrajhar constituency.

Naba Kumar Sarania has been facing legal challenges over the authenticity of his caste certificate. Sarania’s tribal identity card poses a serious blow to his political ambitions in the district.

Guwahati High Court Advocate General Devajit lan Saikia has reacted to the judgement. He said that “today a landmark judgement was passed by the Guwahati High Court.”

The sitting MP from Kokrajhar Lok Sabha constituency has been contesting the seat since 2019, but a complaint was lodged in 2019 by Janak Lal Basumatary challenging the tribal certificate based on which Nava Kumar Sarania participated in the election process in the reserve category seat.

After receiving the complaint, the state-level scrutiny committee under the concerned department, which is the WPT and BC departments, started the proceeding.

The court’s decision marks a pivotal moment in this ongoing saga, and could change the politics of Kokrajhar. The state government has affirmed that all the reserve categories seats are for the actual deserving candidates who belong to reserve categories and only they should contest.
