Guwahati, April 12: Family members of a first year student at IIT Guwahati has alleged that ‘ragging’ might be the cause behind the death of the 20 years old B tech student from Bihar, whose body was found on Wednesday night at his hostel room at IIT Guwahati. While police have registered a case of unnatural death and Postmortem of the body has been done, the family has demanded a probe, a report said on Thursday.
Police sources say that it might be a case of suicide due to stress and other issues but they are investigating all possible angles and awaiting the autopsy report.
The IIT Guwahati had remained silent and issued a statement saying “It is with deep regret that IIT Guwahati shares the unfortunate news of the death of a male student on campus on 10th April. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family, and we are providing them with the necessary support during this difficult time. The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident. Our thoughts are with the grieving family. Keeping the privacy of the student and sensitivity of this incident in consideration, the media is requested to maintain discretion while reporting on this incident. ”
However from IIT Guwahati sources said that the body was found in his hostel room on Wednesday night, the room mate of the deceased was not around. Even the security guards were not aware initially, sources added.
Family member have added that they have filed a separate police complaint against the institute for alleged negligence.
This year IIT Guwahati had been in news for wrong reasons.
In January, a fourth year girl student was rushed to hospital in an unconscious state after partying on new year’s Eve in Guwahati city, was declared dead on arrival.
Recently, another IIT Guwahati students was arrested by Assam STF after made claims to have joined the ISIS.
