Muslim women celebrates scrapping of archaic Marriage and Divorce Act

Guwahati, Feb 25: Muslim women’s in Assam expressed their happiness on the repeal of British era law – Registration of Muslim Marriages and Divorces Act, 1935, which was repealed by the State government.

The Muslim women hailed the decision of the government. “We thank the Assam government for taking the decision. Today, we are celebrating because the “colonial-era” law will be repealed”, said Rekha Doley, who runs a training centre for victims of triple talaq.

“Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has taken a strong step for women’s empowerment and we thank him. The training centre has given opportunity to women’s faced atrocities by their husband,” said Saheba Ahmed.

The women’s at the centre celebrated the decision of the government by distributing sweets.

On Friday, the State Government had taken the decision to repeal the Act. The Cabinet has also decided to provide financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh to each of the 94 Muslim marriage registrars for their rehabilitation.
