Shillong, Sept 29: All India Congress Committee (AICC) spokesperson Onika Mehrotra on Friday lashed out at the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) for its hypocrisy over the Women’s Reservation Bill, stating that this is just an eyewash since the 2024 elections are around the corner.

Mehrotra said that just by changing the nomenclature, the BJP will not be able to fool the women of the country.

“We want the central government to immediately implement the bill, if they really mean it. This bill was the Congress party’s initiative and never got clearance from the Lok Sabha in 2010. Where were they all these past nine and a half years?” questioned the AICC spokesperson.

Emphasising that they support the bill, but looking at the clause that has been listed in the bill, Mehrotra said that the clause is worrying.

“A lot of glorification has been done on the Women’s Reservation Bill, and the bill was passed. We’re obviously very happy that women are going to get the reservation, but there are ifs and buts in the bill. The clauses that they have put in are two very dangerous laws,” said Mehrotra.
