Guwahati, Sept 25: The Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBI), or Guwahati Airport, has embarked on an ambitious plan to make products from the region reach their destinations around the world within 24 hours. The domestic cargo division of the airport wants ‘pluck to pan’ within 24 hours and has begun developing infrastructure accordingly.

The Domestic Cargo terminal has handled inbound & outbound cargo totalling about 1000 metric tonnes in the last three months that includes 146 tonnes in June, 411 tonnes in July, and 426 tonnes in August this year.

“Assam and the Northeast has a very big untapped potential of perishable air cargo. Besides rice, tea and orchid, the region has several unique products that has appeal in the global market. Bhut Jalakia, pineapple, ginger, kazinemu, other daily used vegetables are some of the agriculture products this region may feed to a global community ranging from Dubai to Singapore. We are creating the infrastructure such that pluck to pan is within 24 hours. Holding hands with the Government of Assam we are creating the cargo market that may bring economic prosperity to the grassroot level of citizens residing in this region,” said the Chief Airport Officer of LGBI.

The cargo terminal is currently 550 square meters in area and a new plan is being initiated to build an international cargo terminal building in a very near future.

The terminal is equipped with state of the art facilities like – handling of general and valuable cargo facility, DGR handling, temperature sensitive cargo handling infrastructure like perishable, live saving drugs, human remains, postal mails, courier and other commodities from Assam and the North East to various parts of the country.
