TURA, July 25: A quick breakthrough has been made into the attack on the chief minister’s meeting with ACHIK leaders at CMO Tura in Dakopgre, Tura, with 18 people including two BJP Mahila morcha women in police net while two Trinamool leaders who also instigated the crowds are on the run.

Police have been able to arrest Belina M Marak and Dilche Ch Marak, both BJP Mahila Morcha leaders late Monday night. Police teams chased and nabbed them from the venue as the mob began attacking allegedly on their instigations.

Two Trinamool Congress leaders who were also part of the crowd and had encouraged the mob to turn violent have been identified and are currently on the run.

One of the ring leaders of the Trinamool has been identified from video footage and eyewitness accounts at the site as Salseng R Marak.

The accused hails from Selsella and had contested the MDC elections of the GHADC unsuccessfully from Siju-Baghmara area of South Garo Hills reportedly on a UDP ticket.

Residing as a tenant in Dakopgre, opposite Gate No 2 of the Doordarshan TV tower, he had applied for a Congress ticket to contest from Selsella in this year’s assembly elections.

The Congress, with foresight, rejected his candidature for Selsella and instead gave it to the nephew of former minister Late Clement Marak. He allegedly joined the Trinamool Congress after the Congress rejection.

The accused is under the radar of wildlife authorities for his alleged involvement in the trade of endangered monitor lizards in an illegal cross border smuggling racket with Bangladesh.
