Shillong, June 26: The Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad K Sangma on Monday expressed his concern over the ban on fish and hopes that the citizens understand that any action taken by the administration regarding food safety is for the safety of the citizens themselves.

The state has restricted the sale of fish mainly coming from outside the state. This decision was taken after the food safety department detected formalin in the fish particularly the ones from Andhra Pradesh.

“We have to realise that the chemicals found in some of the fish sold, where chemicals like formalin, which is a chemical used to preserve dead bodies and is highly cancerous and very dangerous for human consumption was found. This should not be there in the fish. Hence we understand that supply of fish and other food items is necessary for the state but the safety, security and health of the citizens is a priority to us,” stated Sangma.

He further mentioned that the government is trying to figure out how to minimize the problem. Sangma said that the step was taken as a conscious decision and was made by the govt, since the state has a number of cancer cases, so as a step towards that, all aspects of what could affect the health of the citizens are being taken.
