Imphal, June 10: Assam chief minister and NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday visited Manipur and met chief minister N Biren Singh.

The meeting was aimed at addressing the pressing issues and working towards restoring peace and normalcy in Manipur. Both the chief ministers discussed about the ongoing violence in Manipur.

N. Biren Singh briefed Sarma about the problems which has plagued the state since May 3, 2023. The violence in Manipur between the Hindu Meiteis and the Kuki tribals, who are Christians, erupted after a rally by the All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) on May 3.

Violence has gripped the entire state for more than a month now, and the Central government has deployed paramilitary forces to bring the situation under control.

On Friday, the Supreme Court declined the urgent listing of a plea against the suspension of internet services in the violence-hit state, saying High Court is seized of the matter.

“High Court is seized of the matter. Why are you duplicating it? Let it come before the regular bench,” said a vacation bench of Justices Aniruddha Bose and Rajesh Bindal.

On the other hand, the three-member Commission, which was constituted by the Union Home Ministry (MHA) to probe the recent series of ethnic violence in Manipur, reached the state on June 9.

The MHA, which constituted the Commission of Inquiry on June 4, has asked the probe panel to submit its report to the Central government as soon as possible but not later than six months from the date of its first sitting.

The judicial commission under the chairmanship of the Gauhati High Court’s former Chief Justice Ajai Lamba would soon start their inquiry into the ethnic strife, which broke out on May 3.

The ethnic-riot in Manipur has claimed 105 lives and injured over 320 people, so far.
