TURA, 9 Feb : Three time sitting MLA of Gambegre and Congress candidate Saleng A Sangma had a run in with the election commission’s vigilance and static team during a naka checking on the road in which he reportedly refused to stop his Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and forcibly drove away only to be chased by a posses of police and election vigilance teams that caught up with him on the Gambegre road undertook an inspection of his car to check, if any, for cash and other incentives for voters.

They didn’t find anything substantial.

The Election Commission appointed vigilance teams on duty with police at 9th mile, away from Tura on the road towards Gambegre, spotted a police escort gypsy travelling with a SUV containing the MLA heading towards Gambegre from Tura on Wednesday evening.

They were signalled to stop.

But, instead of adhering to the diktats of the vigilance team deployed at the naka checking, the SUV containing the MLA drove through and sped away. The police and vigilance teams gave chase and managed to catch up with the vehicle on the Gambegre road where it was given a thorough search.

Although the vehicle and the legislator were not detained, yet, in view of the violation authorities have immediately removed the police escort facility and the personal security officers (PSOs) and dispatched them back to Shillong, away from duty of the legislator.

A case has also been registered and police maintain that they will go by the book to ensure no one gets away from breaking the law.
