Shillong, March 21: Students of the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) on Friday demanded the immediate appointment of a senior most professor as an acting vice chancellor while continuing to reject the ‘remote’ functioning of Prof PS Shukla, who resumed charge as vice chancellor virtually earlier this month.
The demand came after the expiry of the 48-hour ultimatum given to the Ministry of Education by the North Eastern Hill University Students’ Union (NEHUSU), North Eastern Hill University Teachers Association (NEHUTA) and North Eastern Hill University Non-Teaching Staff Association (NEHUNSA) on Thursday.
Speaking to media persons, NEHUSU president Sandy Sohtun said that since the ministry is yet to respond to their demand, they have decided to demand the immediate appointment of a senior most professor as acting VC.
“The 48-hour ultimatum has expired yestady and today in the morning we had a discussion with the different authorities in which we told them to go as per rules to appoint senior most professor as acting VC, he said.
“Since the senior most professor N Saha he is on leave, we have to approach the second senior most professor of the universty for appointment as the acting VC of the university,” Sohtun added.
He informed that they are yet to receive any communication from the state government in view of the ongoing imbroglio in the university.
Meanwhile, the three statutory bodies reaffirmed that they will not allow Prof Shukla to return to the campus and reiterated their demand for his immediate resignation as VC.
