1st landslide of 2024 hits Meghalaya, traffic disrupted at East Jaintia Hills’ Sonapur Tunnel

Jowai, Feb 3: With the year 2024 in just its second month, the first major landslide has hit the state at the Sonapur Tunnel in East Jaintia Hills.

The landslide, which was reported early morning on Saturday, has disrupted traffic along National Highway 6.

Meanwhile, East Jaintia Hills police have promptly issued a traffic advisory in response to the incident. Police officials informed that efforts are underway to clear the debris.

They have also urged the commuters to exercise caution while driving the affected area.

It is to be mentioned here that the Sonapur area sees frequent landslides throughout the year, especially during monsoon. Last year, a landslide cut off access to the tunnel, leaving trucks and heavy vehicles stranded for days, while the smaller vehicles had to take a detour through village and jungle roads.

The tunnel is an important route for the state as it allows Meghalaya access to Assam’s Silchar and the states of Mizoram and Tripura.
